FLEAS - Fleas And Your Home

Fleas in houses are usually linked with a pet or a visiting cat or dog. Flea problems often occur when the host animal (cat or dog usually) has been absent for a period of time, such as when the family goes on vacation, taking or boarding the pet.

Fleas may also be driven into the house during prolonged periods of wet weather. Each species of flea has one or two kinds of animals it prefers, although when hungry, it will attack a wide variety of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Cat and dog fleas periodically jump on and off the host. When the host is removed for a period of time, they are left without food.

Hungry adult fleas often attack on the first warm-blooded animal that comes in the door, often biting people around the ankles. In addition, vibrations promote emergence of new adults from pupae; walking across the floor will trigger emergence.

Something to keep you awake at night......

Bugs give humans the creeps for reasons we don't fully comprehend. It makes sense that we wouldn't care much for insects that are capable of spreading disease, inflicting painful stings or eating our homes from the ground up.

However, there is something about a crunchy cockroach or a slimy worm that we just can't stomach, and it doesn't seem to be related to what they can do to us. We're much bigger, and we can crush them with hardly any effort. Instead, we run and scream and invent new dance moves.

The list below definitely justifies our heebie jeebies...

Termites munching on Aussie homes are causing more damage than floods, fires and storms combined, a state building authority says!

The pest's voracity across the nation has prompted calls for a nationwide action plan to stop it in its tracks. Archicentre Australia director Peter Georgiev says he wants all state governments to make it mandatory for councils to declare termite infestation zones.

"The termites are eating people out of house and home," Mr Georgiev told AAP. "They don't care about state boundaries. All these boundaries are man-made and they are not in the natural order of things; termites are everywhere."

Please be aware that the QBCC (the 'old' BSA - Building Services Authority) has different categories for termite inspectors. If your inspector is doing a general termite inspection to your home, they should have a TERMITE MANAGEMENT CHEMICAL license with the QBCC.

If they only have a TERMITE MANAGEMENT PHYSICAL license they are restricted to only inspecting homes that COME UNDER that category... and there are not a lot of properties in that category! FLEAS - Fleas And Your Home

Fleas in houses are usually linked with a pet or a visiting cat or dog. Flea problems often occur when the host animal (cat or dog usually) has been absent for a period of time, such as when the family goes on vacation, taking or boarding the pet.

Fleas may also be driven into the house during prolonged periods of wet weather. Each species of flea has one or two kinds of animals it prefers, although when hungry, it will attack a wide variety of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Cat and dog fleas periodically jump on and off the host. When the host is removed for a period of time, they are left without food. Hungry adult fleas often attack on the first warm-blooded animal that comes in the door, often biting people around the ankles. In addition, vibrations promote emergence of new adults from pupae; walking across the floor will trigger emergence.

PESTS LOVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS! There is SO much on offer with left over food, food wrappers, wrapping paper - the garbage bin is groaning, the recycling bin too .... here are a few TIPS to help keep COCKROACHES, ANTS & RATS out of your home this festive season:

1. Keep all foodstuffs in sealed plastic containers, or in the fridge - well out of the way of foraging pests...
2. Don't leave dirty dishes laying around overnight - put them in the dishwasher and TURN IT ON, or wash up!
3. Cockroaches DO fly in (they are the big cockies) but IF WE HAVE done pest control at YOUR place, they will soon come into contact with the products we have left behind in the wall cavities, roof void, AND behind your appliances, on skirting boards etc - and that will be the END of them. It's the LITTLE GERMAN COCKROACHES that can invade your kitchen, bathrooms and laundry - where there is moisture and a food source... THEY are the FAST BREEDING cockroaches and they are BIG TROUBLE. Termites (white ants) are a problem in most parts of Australia, but they are particularly active in hot, wet areas such as Coastal Queensland. Please read below some useful tips thanks to the QBCC (Queensland Building & Construction Commission):

REDUCE THE RISKS: To deter concealed termite entry to the dwelling, regular maintenance is essential. The following list is a guide to what owners should and should not do to protect their home from termites.

1. Have the building inspected at least annually by a suitably qualified termite management contractor, licensed in Queensland by QBCC. More frequent inspections may be required in high risk areas.
2. Owners should perform their own ongoing inspections between professional inspections.
3. Owners should be careful not to compromise their termite management system. Termite infestations can occur when a perimeter system has been made ineffective.
4. Special care should be taken to protect the 'weep holes'

MAKE SURE YOUR CONTRACTORS ARE PROPERLY LICENSED

Please be aware that the QBCC (the 'old' BSA - Building Services Authority) has different categories for termite inspectors. If your inspector is doing a general termite inspection to your home, they should have a TERMITE MANAGEMENT CHEMICAL license with the QBCC.

Did you know... If they only have a TERMITE MANAGEMENT PHYSICAL license they are restricted to only inspecting homes that COME UNDER that category... and there are not a lot of properties in that category! THIS is noted on their license history on the QBCC site. There are several pest management companies on the Gold Coast that do NOT have the required license to inspect YOUR home.

BED BUGS - How Do You Know You Have Them? Are They Really Bed Bugs? Where Do You Look To Find Them?

1. The Bed Base is by far the most common place to find Bed Bugs. Particularly where the bed base dust material on the bottom is stapled to the base frame. Where this material attaches to the bed base is a favourite hiding place because it's never disturbed and is still close to their feeding host (that's you and me.... Sleeping!)
2. Mattress Seams - the seams of the mattress can be infested if there is little disturbance to the Bed Bug. Tags on the mattress can also be a great place for them to hide.
3. Head Board - Depending on the material used, a headboard can be a good place for Bed Bugs. The more joins and cracks in the headboard the more likely the Bed Bug will find a home there.
4. Wheels of the Bed - the join between the wheel and the bed base is tight and never disturbed. A perfect place for Bed Bugs to breed.
5. Bedside Table - Although it's not as common to find them in bedside tables, Bed Bugs will still infest them if they provide easy access to the host.... You and Me!
6. Carpet Edges - Bed Bugs love to get into tight places, and where the carpet meets the wall is a join they head for. They'll often hang out just under the carpet edge so be sure to check under these areas, using something to lift the carpet.
7. Luggage - we transport Bed Bugs around in the seams and edges of our luggage. Check your luggage inside and out and you may find some Bed Bugs, or the tell-tale signs of blood spots.EWWWWWWWW.

FLEAS And Your Home

Fleas in houses are usually linked with a pet or a visiting cat or dog. Flea problems often occur when the host animal (cat or dog usually) has been absent for a period of time, such as when the family goes on vacation, taking or boarding the pet.

Fleas may also be driven into the house during prolonged periods of wet weather. Each species of flea has one or two kinds of animals it prefers, although when hungry, it will attack a wide variety of warm-blooded animals, including humans. Cat and dog fleas periodically jump on and off the host. When the host is removed for a period of time, they are left without food. Hungry adult fleas often attack on the first warm-blooded animal that comes in the door, often biting people around the ankles. In addition, vibrations promote emergence of new adults from pupae; walking across the floor will trigger emergence.

Have your carpets cleaned BEFORE you have a flea treatment carried out. Do not vacuum or mop for at least 14 days after the flea treatment. Please be patient. Even when everything has been done correctly, you will still see newly hatched fleas, usually for several weeks. These will die in the chemical residue in your carpet/flooring.

TERMITES Chemical Barriers Washed Away

Did you know the Exterra Termite Interception & Baiting System is NOT affected by extreme weather!? During a major flood event, water passing through the chemical barrier will diminish its strength, and may also affect any warranty that is in place.

If your owner's properties have been subject to the extreme weather events of recent months, we strongly recommend a full termite inspection of your property to ensure it is termite free. Termites are attracted to wet wood and historically, termite activity increases following the wet season, particularly in SE Qld where we have seasons of very warm weather interspersed with rain and high humidity. COCKROACHES, SALMONELLA & ASTHMA - CSIRO Report - German Cockroaches Spread Disease & Cause Asthma!

The CSIRO advise that one of the most significant pest cockroaches worldwide is the German cockroach. They move freely from areas that may harbour pathogenic organisms: for example, from sewers or rubbish... to food - or food utensils - and over food preparation areas.

They are known to carry salmonella and other diseases. Cockroach allergens can also be responsible for asthma. They live and breed in the numerous cracks and crevices and hiding places in most kitchens, bathrooms and living areas. They also live and breed in white goods, often nesting around circuit boards - causing extensive damage. German cockroaches never move far from their food source. Their small size means that they are initially tolerated by human occupants, many of whom don't recognise early nymphal stages as cockroaches. Their rapid reproduction rate enables a few individuals to become a major pest problem over one season.

Can they show you their pest control license? Does their truck and equipment confirm to the Australian standards?

Please be aware that the QBCC (the 'old' BSA - Building Services Authority) has different categories for termite inspectors. If your inspector is doing a general termite inspection to your home, they should have a TERMITE MANAGEMENT CHEMICAL license with the QBCC.

If they only have a TERMITE MANAGEMENT PHYSICAL license they are restricted to only inspecting homes that COME UNDER that category... and there are not a lot of properties in that category! THIS is noted on their license history on the QBCC site. There are several pest management companies on the Gold Coast that do NOT have the required license to inspect YOUR home.

ANTS!!!

Ants are social insects which form colonies that range in size from a few dozen living in small cavities around the home, to highly organised colonies which can sometimes occupy large areas, and consist of millions of ants. They communicate and cooperate using chemicals (pheromones) that can alert others to danger or lead them to a good food source.

Ant communities/colonies are headed by a queen, or several queens, whose sold function in life is to lay THOUSANDS of eggs that will hatch, and ensure the colony survives. The Worker ants (the ones that come out and annoy US) are wingless females that never reproduce. They forage for food and look after the 'kids'... they work in the nest and also have a host of other 'ant duties'. Male ants have only one role, mating with the queen. After they've done that they may die. Goodness!

This is a really good time to keep on top of them. They come into our homes looking for food and shelter, or to get away from danger, It's certainly NOT a winter problem - it's been an ongoing problem for the past 1-2 years around the coast. Once the weather cools down they will be looking for WARM shelter - and that will be inside your roof cavity!

Can You Hear Them Munching In Your House?

Termites date back more than 100 million years to the Cretaceous period. Although they are commonly called 'white ants', they are actually more closely related to cockroaches and in fact have been recently included into the cockroach order Blattodea.

Did you know Schedorhinotermes spp., Coptotermes sp. are two of the MOST damaging termites in the world - and they thrive right here on the Coast. Don't blame termites - it was white ants this time!

Chinese farmer buries money for safekeeping but termites ate the stash! 

A 60-year-old farmer in Sichuan, China, found himself 20,000 yuan ($3,000) poorer when the banknotes he buried in his bedroom had been destroyed by white ants.

Qi Shengli, who lives in Goujiao town in Yuechi county, told Chinese media outlets that he didn't remember exactly how long the money was stored in the 15 cm (6-inch) deep hole he dug in the corner of his bedroom. "It might be one or two years," he said.

Two exotic termites find love in Florida, worrying researchers

Two particularly hungry, exotic termite species apparently have found love halfway around the world and, as with so many other Florida hook-ups, the results are disturbing.

Asian and Formosan subterranean termites are two of the most destructive termite species in the world, responsible for much of the estimated $40 billion in economic losses attributed to termites annually. Their habitat ranges overlap in lush South Florida, already home to a daunting number of invasive plant and animal species thriving where they should not. Each termite invaded Florida, probably through cargo shipments, several decades ago, but experts believed the colonies didn't mingle because their aboveground mating swarms launched in different months.

SUGAR ANTS - Over 100 Different Types!

There are MORE than ONE HUNDRED Australian species of SUGAR ANTS and they can be among some of the most common ants!

• THE HOUSEHOLD SUGAR ANT: Camponotus humilior (length 5-8 mm) commonly nests inside houses in wall cavities or ceiling spaces in south-east Queensland.
• THE GOLDEN-TAILED SUGAR ANT: Camponotus aeneopilosus (length 5-9 mm), is common in open forests and woodlands in eastern mainland Australia.
• THE BANDED SUGAR ANT: Camponotus consobrinus (length 7-12 mm), is widely distributed in open forest, woodlands and grasslands in south-eastern Australia. (thanks to the Queensland Museum for the above information)
• THE WHITE FOOTED HOUSE ANT: Is a very common annoyance for residents of SE Queensland. They are strongly attracted to sweet foods but they will also feed on dead insects and other protein.

WILL TERMITES REALLY EAT MY HOUSE? The Annual Damage Bill Is Over $1Billion In Australia...

Many home owners put their heads in the sand when it comes to termites, and think "it won't happen to me"... READ ON for some scary statistics - and some even scarier photos we took at recent jobs!

According to the CSIRO, S E QLD are classed as HIGH to VERY HIGH chance that termites will attack your home! The most recent CSIRO survey reported 32% of homes had a termite presence. This has been confirmed by the Institute of Australian Architects whose survey in essence said "of all the homes inspected prior to sale, one third had some termite damage".

Another important statistic is that in 2015 less than 20% of homes are inspected or serviced by the professional pest control industry. That means more than 80% of us are blithely believing "it won't happen to me"!!! If 1 in 3 homes are damaged by termites - and yours is one of the other 2... for a small annual fee - why wouldn't you have an annual termite inspection to make sure your home is termite free?

We want to talk to you about ANTS!!

Did you know ants are social insects which form colonies that range in size from a few dozen living in small cavities around the home, to highly organised colonies occupying large areas, and consist of MILLIONS of ants!

Ant communities/colonies are headed by a queen, or several queens, whose only function in life is to lay THOUSANDS of eggs that will hatch, and ensure the colony survives. The female Worker ants (the ones that come out and annoy US) forage for food and look after the 'kids'... they work in the nest and also have a host of other 'ant duties'. Male ants have only one role, mating with the queen. After they've done that they may die. Goodness!
